The cool weather is dangerous to stray animals such as cats.

If you find a litter of kittens or a stray cat in your backyard, you can take some steps to help them get through the winter.

If the cat in question looks like a domestic cat, check with friends and neighbors to see if they missed the pet before assuming it is a stray cat.

You can also take it to the vet to see if it has a microchip implanted.

Pound Buddies of Muskegon said that if you find a stray dog, you can use an old cooler or box to make a temporary home for it.

"Make sure to use straw and don't put blankets or any type of bedding as they will get wet and freeze. This will only increase hypothermia," said Lana Carson of Pound Buddies Animal Shelter. "So it doesn't help, it must be yes, they really freeze, so there are no blankets and any type of outdoor bedding. It must be straw so that it does not freeze and absorb moisture."

The organization told us that many local shelters are already full, and there may be a waiting list if you want to accommodate homeless people.

If the cat has slimy eyes or open wounds, you need to contact your local veterinarian or animal control center.
